by ZY -- Uno... its a simple name, and a simple game. Its a number-matching and color-matching game, and the objective is to get rid of the cards in your hand. Remember to say "Uno" when you have only one card left in your hand, otherwise if someone catches you, your forfeit is to draw 2 cards from the stack. There are 4 colors in Uno: red, green, yellow and blue. Each player is dealt 7 cards at the beginning of the game (it can be any number as long as each player gets the same number of cards). The rest of the cards are put in 2 piles in the middle: the draw pile (face down) and the playing pile. One card is put face up to constitute the playing pile (the starting card in the playing pile should be a number). The player to the left of the dealer can start first. Players take turns to put down a card which is the same color, same number, or same pattern (skip, reverse etc) as the top card of the playing pile. If you have no suitable cards on your turn, then draw 1 card from the draw pile. If the card drawn is suitable, you can put it down, otherwise the next player gets a turn (note that putting down a card is optional if you draw one card). You can put down multiple cards if you have cards of the same number or pattern (e.g. reverse, skip). They do not have to be of the same color. Now the interesting cards.. besides the numbers from 0 to 9, the pattern cards in Uno are: Draw 2 -- Next player has to draw 2 cards from the draw pile and miss a turn. Alternatively, the next player can put down another Draw 2 card to make the next player draw 4 (2+2 cards). Be careful that Draw 2s do not backfire on you when everyone else also has a Draw 2 card and you are forced to draw many cards after it goes one round back to you. Skip -- Skips the next players turn. Multiple skips are also counted. In a 2 player game, Skip goes by the other player and it's your turn again. Reverse -- This card reverses the direction of play. So if A just had a turn and you put Reverse, its A's turn again. Very handy if A is winning and you happen to have a Draw 4, heh heh (more on Draw 4s below). Wild -- The Joker card. If you put down a Wild card, you can change the color to any of the 4 colors in the game. So if you name yellow, the next player has to put out a yellow card or another Wild card. It's legal to put out a Wild on top of a red card and name red as the new color, but that would be really pointless. Wild Draw 4 -- Same as the Wild card, but the next player draws 4 cards and loses a turn. The player that put out the Draw 4 names the color for the next player. The only counter to this is another Draw 4 card. So if the Wild card is a joker, the Draw 4 card is the Joker from Batman (the big bad villain who is up to no good). Downpour 1 / Downpour 2 -- These 2 cards are available only in the updated version of Uno - Uno H2O. The idea is to make plastic cards which are washable and do not get dirty so easily, hence the name H2O. There is no counter to the Downpour cards, and the cards mean each player except the player who put out the card have to draw cards. Everyone misses a turn and its back to the player who put out the Downpour to choose a color. Also note the difference between the 6 and 9 cards: the 6 card has an underline under the rounded part of the digit. To ensure a fair game, you could set a rule so that all players have to end with a number card, and do not finish with pattern cards or Draw 2s, Draw 4s. The player in such a situation has to draw 1 card then put out the pattern card while saying "Uno." (Note: some of the rules outlined here are suggested ways to play Uno.
